What is single-mode fiber optic?
2025-10-21
Single-mode fiber (SMF) is an optical fiber designed to transmit only a single mode of light signal, characterized by wide bandwidth and low signal attenuation, primarily used in long-distance, high-speed communication scenarios.
1. Core Definition and Working Principle
The key feature of single-mode fiber lies in its extremely thin core diameter, typically ranging from 8 to 10 micrometers, which is close to the wavelength of light (approximately 1.3 to 1.55 micrometers).
- Transmission Mode: It only supports the transmission of the fundamental mode (HE₁₁ mode), avoiding the "modal dispersion" issue that occurs between different modes in multimode fiber, thus keeping the signal stable over long distances.
- Operating Windows: It mainly operates in two low-loss wavelength windows: 1310nm and 1550nm. Among them, the 1550nm window has the lowest attenuation (about 0.2dB/km), making it suitable for ultra-long-distance transmission.
2. Key Characteristics
(1)Low Dispersion: There is no modal dispersion, only material dispersion and waveguide dispersion exist. The dispersion can be controlled to an extremely low level through design, supporting long-distance transmission of high-speed signals (such as 100G/1T).
(2)Low Attenuation: The attenuation at the 1550nm window is usually less than 0.25dB/km, much lower than that of multimode fiber (e.g., the attenuation at the 850nm window is about 3dB/km), allowing transmission distances of tens or even hundreds of kilometers.
(3)Wide Bandwidth: Its single-mode characteristic means its bandwidth is not limited by modes. The theoretical bandwidth is extremely high, which can meet the long-term needs of high-speed communication (such as 5G backbone networks and data center interconnection).
(4)High Requirements for Connectors and Coupling: The core is extremely thin, which imposes strict requirements on the alignment accuracy of fiber connectors and the coupling accuracy of light sources (laser diodes, LD are required), resulting in relatively high costs.
3. Main Classifications
Based on dispersion characteristics, single-mode fiber can be divided into the following categories, suitable for different scenarios:

5. Typical Application Scenarios
- Telecom Backbone Networks: Undertake long-distance high-speed data transmission between provinces and countries, serving as the core transmission carrier for 5G and 6G networks.
- Data Center Interconnection (DCI): Connect data centers in different regions to achieve high-speed interaction of large-scale data.
- Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH): Use bend-insensitive single-mode fiber (G.657) to directly transmit signals to homes, providing ultra-broadband services.
- Submarine Optical Cables: Adopt low-attenuation G.655/G.652 fibers to realize transoceanic global communication connections.
